  3. Adjust the threshold and padding, then process.

About this tool

Every voice recording contains sections of silence: the speaker collecting their thoughts, the interviewer reacting, the gap between questions and answers. For a finished podcast or voiceover those gaps need to be managed — either tightened or removed entirely. Doing it manually in an audio editor means watching the waveform and cutting each gap individually, which is tedious for a long recording.

Automatic silence removal detects those gaps by threshold and removes them in a single pass. The padding control is what separates usable output from abrupt-sounding cuts: keeping 100 ms of silence before and after each speech segment means words begin cleanly rather than with clipped consonants, and sentences end with a natural tail rather than a sudden cutoff.

Questions

Will it cut pauses mid-sentence?
Pauses within sentences are usually shorter than the minimum silence length (0.5 seconds by default). Natural speech pauses at phrase boundaries are typically 200–300 ms; the minimum silence setting of 500 ms should avoid cutting those. If you hear cut words in the output, increase the minimum silence length or add more padding.
How much shorter will a typical podcast recording be?
For a conversation with natural pacing, removing silences above 500 ms typically reduces duration by 10 to 25 percent. A poorly paced recording with long pauses, um-and-ah filler, and off-topic tangents might see 30 to 40 percent reduction. The result feels faster but not rushed, because natural within-sentence rhythm is preserved.
My recording has background noise — will the threshold work?
Background noise raises the floor, so a recording with -35 dB of room noise will not produce any detections at the default -40 dB threshold — the tool will see continuous audio. Set the threshold to around -5 dB above the measured noise floor. Use noise reduction first to lower the noise floor before applying silence removal for best results.
