About this tool

Extracting a frame from a video has two distinct uses. The first is getting a thumbnail — a representative image for a video upload, a preview image for a shared link, or a still to use in a presentation or article. The second is quality inspection: scrubbing frame by frame to find a precise moment, check for dropped frames, or confirm the exact composition of a shot.

Contact sheets have a long history in photography and film for exactly the reason they are useful here: they compress the temporal content of a recording into a spatial grid that the eye can scan in a few seconds, giving a sense of what the recording contains without watching the whole thing. They are also useful as archival records for cataloguing large video libraries.

Questions

Can I use this for a YouTube thumbnail?
Yes. Scrub to the frame you want, extract it as a JPG or PNG, and it is ready to upload as a thumbnail. YouTube recommends 1280×720 at minimum — most video is larger, so the extracted frame will exceed that.
What is a contact sheet used for?
A contact sheet shows evenly-spaced frames across the whole video in a grid. It is useful for previewing the content of a clip at a glance, archiving a visual record of what a recording contains, or selecting a good thumbnail frame when you do not know where in the video to look.
Does the frame appear exactly where I scrubbed?
Single-frame extraction seeks to the nearest decoded frame at or before the requested time. For accurate single-frame work, the video must be seekable — which almost all MP4 and WebM files are. Very fragmented or broken files may land a few frames from the target.
