About this tool
A waveform image is both functional and informational: it communicates that the content is audio and gives a visual sense of the dynamic range and structure. Dense speech looks different from music, which looks different from ambient field recording. For a podcast cover image that shows episode content it is a genuinely communicative graphic.
SVG output is the better choice for anything that needs to scale — a header image that might appear at different widths, a waveform that will be embedded in a responsive webpage, or artwork you want to use at multiple sizes without re-generating. PNG is simpler for everything else.
Questions
What is this used for?
Social media posts for podcast episodes and music releases often use a waveform as a visual. YouTube video descriptions, SoundCloud headers, newsletter images, and slide deck visuals are all common places you would want a static waveform image rather than an animated one.
Why does my waveform look flat?
Audio normalised to a very low level (quiet recording) will produce a nearly flat waveform because the amplitude values are small. Normalise the audio first using the volume tool to bring it up to a reasonable level before generating the waveform image.
What is the difference between the bar styles?
Bars renders amplitude as discrete vertical bars — the classic podcast-cover look. Line draws a continuous envelope, which suits music. Mirror reflects the waveform symmetrically above and below the centreline, which looks balanced and is common for social media graphics. Outline fill draws the outline and fills below it with a semi-transparent version of the wave colour.
