The transparent background option handles the niche case of PDFs designed as overlays or watermark layers, where the page background is intentionally absent. Most documents have white backgrounds and this option makes no difference to them.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG for PDF conversion?
PNG is lossless — there are no compression artefacts. Use it when the page contains text, diagrams, or charts with sharp edges where JPG artefacts would be visible. For pages that are mostly photographs, JPG at quality 85 produces a much smaller file with barely any perceptible difference.
What does transparent background mean for a PDF page?
PDF pages with transparent backgrounds are uncommon but do exist — watermark layers, overlays, and some presentation-tool exports use them. With this option on, transparent areas render as PNG transparency rather than being filled with white. In most standard documents the page background is white anyway, so this option has no visible effect.
