About this tool
Decoding a QR code from an image is useful more often than it sounds: a screenshot of a conference room WiFi card, a product photo from a supplier spreadsheet, a QR code in a PDF that you want to read without printing it. Camera scanning is the other use case — useful when you have a physical QR code and your phone is not handy.
The library used here also handles standard linear barcodes, so EAN-13 product codes, shipping Code 128 labels, and GS1 DataMatrix codes can all be decoded from images in the same tool.
Questions
What if the QR code is hard to read?
The decoder tries multiple orientations and scales automatically. If it fails, the most common causes are very low contrast, a photo taken at a steep angle (which distorts the square geometry), or the code being very small in the frame. Crop closer to the code in an image editor and try again.
Which barcode formats are supported?
QR Code and Micro QR Code are the primary targets. The same library also decodes EAN-13, EAN-8, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, DataMatrix and Aztec — so product barcodes and shipping labels work too.
Does camera scanning require any special permissions?
Yes — the browser will ask for camera access the first time you switch to camera mode. That permission is for the live view only; no images are stored or transmitted.
